Leaves:

alternate, simple, 3"-6" long, oblong, coarsely toothed, with no bristles on teeth; shiny dark yellow-green above, whitish beneath

Flowers:

inconspicuous

Fruit:

nut-brown acorn, shiny, with cup covering about half; edible and sweet, ripening in autumn of the first year; in the white oak group so maturing the first season on the current year's twig

yellow-brown; deciduous

sun; dry to medium moisture, tolerant of alkaline soil
