Size:

20'-40' tall by as wide

Leaves:

opposite, palmately compound, 3"-6" long, with 5-7 leaflets, finely toothed and with sharp points; bright green when unfolding (one of the earliest in spring) becoming dark green in summer, paler and smooth beneath

Flowers:

creamy greenish yellow, 1" long, with stamens longer than the 4 petals, in 4"-7" terminal panicles, after leaves emerge; April-May

Fruit:

1-3 light brown buckeyes 1"-2" long, inside a prickly cover; seeds, leaves, and stems poisonous; July-August

Fall Interest:

usually yellow; falling in summer or early fall; deciduous

Culture:

sun to partial shade; moist, deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; better in cooler parts of Arkansas
