Leaves:

alternate, simple, to 11" long, unlobed, with regular rounded teeth 10-15 per side, with no bristles on tips

Flowers:

inconspicuous

Fruit:

acorn enclosed up to half by broad bowl-shaped cup, maturing the first season on the current year's twig; edible and sweet tasting and eaten by wildlife as well as livestock, hence the name cow oak

orange to red; deciduous

sun; moist to wet, acidic soil

wood for flooring and for baskets because the wood splits easily into thin, flexible strips
