alternate, simple, 3"-7" long, oblong, with 6-10 pairs of coarse rounded teeth, sometimes lobed, with no bristles on tips; dark green and shiny above, downy and whitish beneath

Flowers:

inconspicuous

Fruit:

acorn 1/3 enclosed by deep cup, usually two on long stalk, maturing the first season on the current year's twig

yellow, sometimes reddish purple; deciduous

Culture:

sun; medium to wet soil, acidic soil

Use:

shade tree, good for low spots; wood for furniture but more knotty and less valuable than white oak

bark gray to dark brown and rough, with upper branches often peeling; can live for 350 years; "bicolor" refers to the green and white surfaces of the leaves; native to north central and northeastern US
