Leaves:
alternate but clustered at the ends of stout branches, simple, 14"-22" long with smooth untoothed margins, with V-shaped base; somewhat resembling an open umbrella
Flowers:
white, 10" across, bowl-shaped, with an unpleasant fragrance; April-May
Fruit:
4" pink cone-like cluster, with seeds dark pink to red; July-October
Fall Interest:
yellow; deciduous

partial sun; rich, consistently moist soil
